sharon osberg (SharonO) > After a 10-month wait, Joan and I are finally on our way .
sharon osberg (SharonO) > We flew from San Francisco to Washington DC, then on to Buenos Aires, Argentina. This was our hotel in Buenos Aires. It was a long trip, but once we got there, the hotel and weather were great.
sharon osberg (SharonO) > After a short rest, we did a bit of sightseeing. This church was in a beautiful area near our hotel.
sharon osberg (SharonO) > The next morning we flew to Ushuaia, Argentina, which is at the very tip of South America. This is the approach into Ushuaia. All boats going to the Antarctic Peninsula depart from Ushuaia.
sharon osberg (SharonO) > We spent our first day in Ushuaia sightseeing on foot. The next morning we awoke to find our ship had docked. It's the odd-looking yellow one.
sharon osberg (SharonO) > Her name is the Kapitan Khlebnikov. She's a working icebreaker of Russian registry staffed with an all-Russian crew. She isn't beautiful, but you wouldn't want to meet her in a dark alley. She's a very powerful ship. These days, she does tourism in the austral spring/summer in Antarctica . After that, she moves north where she does mostly oil exploration during the Arctic summer. Until recently, she was used for tourism in the Arctic too, but global warming has opened up much of the area so that icebreakers can now make their way to potential oil fields. Not good.
sharon osberg (SharonO) > Ushuaia is the southern-most town in the world, nestled near the end of the Andes mountain chain.
sharon osberg (SharonO) > The Beagle Channel.
sharon osberg (SharonO) > To entertain us while the Khlebnikov was being cleaned and restocked, Quark (our expedition company) took all of us to Tierra del Fuego National Park.
